Period pain is common—but that doesn’t mean it’s normal.

From a Western medical perspective, period pain (dysmenorrhea) is often caused by: 🔹 Excess prostaglandins (inflammatory compounds that trigger uterine contractions) 🔹 Endometriosis or adenomyosis 🔹 Fibroids or pelvic inflammatory disease 🔹 Hormonal imbalances (like estrogen dominance)

But in Chinese medicine, we go a step further—we ask why these imbalances are happening. Pain is seen as a message from the body: - Is there stagnation, cold, or deficiency? - Is there internal heat or dampness that needs clearing?

There’s something so satisfying about seeing cupping marks in public—it’s a little sign that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is becoming more mainstream, and I love to see it!

In Australia, the demand for TCM has been steadily growing. As of 2022, there were over 4,500 nationally registered Chinese medicine practitioners. A 2017 study found that 5.3% of Australians had seen a TCM practitioner, with acupuncture being a top choice. Even more interesting? Nearly 10% of young Aussie women have turned to acupuncture for support.

It’s amazing to see TCM gaining the respect and recognition it deserves—whether in research, clinical practice, or just through the people around us embracing it. The world is catching on, and honestly… it’s about time!

We’re not meant to be overly stimulated while we’re in our beds, which ideally, our brain should associate with sleep and winding down. Screen time and social activity right before we sleep can impact our sleep because:

💤 Blue light disrupts melatonin: Exposure to blue light from screens inhibits melatonin production, the hormone responsible for helping you fall asleep. This delays your ability to wind down.

💤 Mental stimulation prevents relaxation:
Activities like conversations or intense mental tasks activate your brain (and possibly the release of adrenaline), making it harder to relax and prepare for sleep.

💤 Sleep quality suffers: Both screen time and engaging in discussions increase alertness, reducing the quality and depth of your sleep.

Instead, try to:

Create a calm bedtime routine:
Help your brain to associate your bed with sleep, and not activity- if you need to be on your phone, watching TV, chatting- do it outside of bed first.
😴 Limit screen use 30-60 minutes before bed.
😴 Opt for relaxing activities like reading or meditation.

Your body needs a clear signal to rest—make your bedroom the perfect environment for sleep!

Eating well is actually pretty simple when we're talking about TCM.

As in all forms of medicine, you want to eat enough protein, fat and carbs as a base. However in Chinese Medicine, we also want to make sure the body can digest these quickly and easily, which keeps our bodies functioning flowing smoothly. So, stick to about 80% warm and cooked foods and drinks; and 20% raw, cold or iced.

Dampness is a disease pattern in TCM that is linked to digestive upset, with symptoms like diarrhoea, bloating and even pain. Avoid this sluggishness through really limiting highly processed, fried, fatty and sugary foods.

Lastly, don't eat on the go! Make your meal time a moment of presence and calm- sit down without distraction and eat slowly.

Sperm isn’t what it used to be! ⬇️⬇️

Sperm has been on the decline for a while. Sperm counts have dropped by 1.16% each year over a 45 year period (1973-2018), yet since 2000, this number has DOUBLED to around 2.64% per year. Sperm quality is also declining fast.

This is likely due to combination of exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals in the environment, smoking, alcohol, stress and even localised heat. Men, it’s not your fault- but cutting down on a lot of poor habits and optimizing your lifestyle can make a huge difference.

Improving sperm quality and concentration is crucial when conceiving. Good sperm = easier conception and healthier babies!

For this week, I had just finished my period, my lower back has been aching for 8 days and the only thing that makes it feel better is heat.
