Iron is not just about energy!

It’s a critical fertility nutrient. Ferritin, your iron storage marker, needs to sit above 30 ng/mL in traditional testing, but I want to see it MUCH higher than even that for fertile optimisation, healthy ovulation and implantation.

Here’s what the research shows:
⏺️ Ovulation problems: Anovulation nearly doubles when ferritin falls below 20 ng/mL.
⏺️ Longer time-to-pregnancy: Conception can take 2–3 months longer with low iron.
⏺️ Higher miscarriage risk: Early pregnancy loss rises to 19 % when iron is insufficient, due to poor implantation and placental growth.
⏺️ Treatment works: Raising ferritin above even 40 ng/mL can restore regular ovulation in as little as 3 cycles, without other fertility treatments.
⏺️ Better outcomes: In IVF patients, correcting iron deficiency nearly doubled live birth rates.

👉 If you’re trying to conceive, don’t overlook ferritin. Ask for it by name in your next blood test. “Normal” isn’t always optimal when it comes to fertility.

As a teen, I wanted to study Western Medicine and become a doctor. Getting the right grades while balancing all the stresses of being 17 got a bit much, and I started to become severely anxious. Going to school everyday with heart palpitations, overthinking and crying in the bathrooms, I would come home exhausted, but struggle to get over 3 hours of sleep.

I internalised all of this, but eventually went to a GP to seek help. My advice was to “just not stress” and was reassured that I was “too young to be anxious”. After many disappointing experiences, I decided I wanted to find a medicine that felt more personalised, more human and more comprehensive.

I decided to study Chinese Medicine and found exactly what I was looking for. After a few months of acupuncture and TCM guidance, I was sleeping like a baby. Even now, it’s rare for me to have a poor night’s sleep.

I now find it so fulfilling to help people struggling with their mental health. One of the biggest aims of my practice is to help these people understand the way that they work and learn how to manage any health issues they face. I see my patients as complex, whole people, with many symptoms that are interrelated and have a story. Because I’ve been there before, and I get it.

Nearly 10% of young Aussie women have turned to acupuncture for support.

We’re not meant to be overly stimulated while we’re in our beds, which ideally, our brain should associate with sleep and winding down. Screen time and social activity right before we sleep can impact our sleep because:

💤 Mental stimulation prevents relaxation:

Can’t wind down at night? ⬇️

We’re not meant to be overly stimulated while we’re in our beds, which ideally, our brain should associate with sleep and winding down. Screen time and social activity right before we sleep can impact our sleep because:

💤 Blue light disrupts melatonin: Exposure to blue light from screens inhibits melatonin production, the hormone responsible for helping you fall asleep. This delays your ability to wind down.

💤 Mental stimulation prevents relaxation:
Activities like conversations or intense mental tasks activate your brain (and possibly the release of adrenaline), making it harder to relax and prepare for sleep.

💤 Sleep quality suffers: Both screen time and engaging in discussions increase alertness, reducing the quality and depth of your sleep.

Instead, try to:

Create a calm bedtime routine:
Help your brain to associate your bed with sleep, and not activity- if you need to be on your phone, watching TV, chatting- do it outside of bed first.
😴 Limit screen use 30-60 minutes before bed.
😴 Opt for relaxing activities like reading or meditation.
