Title

Cupping is a Traditional therapy used in Chinese Medicine that is so popular it has been adopted by Physiotherapists and Massage Therapists. This therapy involves the use of a glass or plastic cups on the skin to create a vacuum or suction effect. Kiah likes to describe cupping as a ‘reverse massage’, where rather than pushing downward on the skin, we are instead pulling upward. This stimulates blood and lymph circulation through the treatment area, and is thought to assist in toxin clearing, muscle pain/tension and modulate the immune system.

Cupping is not usually painful, but rather patients may feel a strong sensation from the suction. Kiah always ensures their clients are comfortable and any therapy can be stopped or reduced at any time. However, many clients are now ‘cupping addicts’!

Cupping leaves a mark Traditionally referred to as ‘Sha’. Many people think that these are the same as bruises, however they are not painful and are more like a love bite. Cupping marks come in all different colours, and range from dark purple to light pink. Depending on your blood circulation, cupping marks will usually fade in around 5-7 days.

Cupping: About

I acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which I practice. I pay my respects to their Elders—past, present, and emerging—and honor their enduring connection to land, waters, and culture. Sovereignty was never ceded. This always was, and always will be, Aboriginal land.
